Improvements and setbacks for women in America

While black pride took a giant step forward yesterday, women's rights came increasingly under threat.

Almost lost in the news of Obama's victory, there was both good and bad news for women in several states in the US.

The good news is that in Colorado and South Dakota, voters rejected ballot measures that would have restricted access to abortion.

In Colorado, the ballot, which would have led to a recognition of fertilised eggs, even those outside a womb, as 'persons' - thus probably ending any possibility of in vitro fertilisation for infertile couples - was rejected by a whopping 74 per cent of voters.

In South Dakota, the ballot would have restricted abortion to victims of rape or incest, or women whose health was in danger, and any doctors performing abortions outside of those circumstances would have faced jail or fines. This too was rejected.

Sadly, rights for gay couples were lost in California, Arizona, Florida and Arkansas.

California's Proposition 8, which sought to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry, was passed by 52 per cent, thus invalidating all the recent gay marriages that have taken place - a huge blow for hundreds of people.

The Arizona measure, Proposition 102, redefined marriage as 'between one man and one woman', therefore denying gay marriage rights in that state (passed by 56 per cent), while a bigger victory for the right came in Florida, where Proposition 2, also redefining marriage as a union between one man and one women, passed by 63 per cent.

In Arkansas, came the worst results of all, as gay and lesbian couples, whose marriages cannot be legally recognised in that state, came under a blanket ban on 'unmarried couples' adopting or providing foster care for children. This passed with 57 percent voter approval, a sad defeat for many committed couples who want to raise children, and for the many children who need caring and stable home environments.

So, a grim day for gay rights in the US, but hopefully there will be a fight back and legal challenges to all the rulings will ensue.

There is still one small ray of hope for gay marriage. Those states who have voted for not allowing it still have to send the issue to the Supreme Court, who has to rule on the fitness of the issue as law. This is my understanding of it, which I have not yet really delved into, so reality may be slightly different. And it's not even 7 AM right now. ;-)

I think that stepping back from the picture, there may be an advantage for gays and lesbians in this vote. I am an American and was out of my mind with President Idiot and V.P. Evil. Eight years and I just could not imagine why my Higher Power did not put a stop to it, two elections stolen, and horrendous things done to our country, to our people and against other countries.

When President-Elect Barack stood in front of the Chicago crowd to make his first address upon winning, it all came into focus.

WE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD SUCH A BIG WIN IF PRES. IDIOT HAD NOT BEEN SO HORRENDOUS. We would not have been able to vote in a Congress and a president.

Blacks were the first to work themselves out of the macho white male's inclination to abuse others. So, Blacks get first prize. They have worked harder than any and longer AND been tortured more. So, next will be the next generation who suffered in America. We can't have it all at once.

My biggest fear right now, is that President Obama will be given SO MUCH--it is just a MESS, and every single group will want him to prove to THEM that he meant what he said. If we all pull at him at once, how can he possibly succeed?

The election was MARVELOUS....I am SO happy for Blacks......so incredibly happy. I am happy for myself, too. I think that we all need to push ouselves away from the table, take a big deep breath and cut the man a break. There is a lot of rejoicing to do!!!!!!

Sorry but you lost me when it came to setbacks for women. Gay women, yes. But to have an intelligent president finally, who chose Joe Biden, known for the Violence Aganst Women Act: this is a great thing for women. I am still celebrating. And I also want to say: thank you Mrs. Palin! Any help you gave in getting McCain defeated is much appreciated.

Well, I say a setback for women because gay women are women like any other. A setback for gay women is a setback for us all, as human beings and as a gender. I didn't know about Joe Biden, so thanks for that. The more that emerges, the better this presidency looks - I am pleased to find that Obama speaks Spanish, for instance, as did Carter. And I couldn't agree more about Palin - thank heavens for her!
