Terrible Photoshopping

No wonder women feel so bad about themselves when they're routinely presented with images like this.

RedbookCheck out Jezebel's favourite awful cover shot of the year.

The cover girl means nothing to me - an American singer, apparently - and you don't realise quite how bad this Photoshopping is until you see the befores and afters, which Jezebel has outlined in horrible detail. No real human being can anatomically look like this. Just as a clue, look at the length and width of her left arm.

It is very worrying that we are all becoming so used to these airbrushed images and even more disappointing when this mag is aimed at older women. Shame on them.

I really do despair. What kind of example does this set with regards to self-acceptance? In some cultures, older women (and men) become role-models for their acquired knowledge and wisdom, not for how much facial and body rearranging they've had done (Photoshopped or otherwise). The lines on our faces, the shape of our teeth, the width of our hips all have stories to tell about us, as individuals. When I smile, I want it to be a smile of personal authenticity - crow's feet, lip lines, crooked teeth an' all. If we are lucky enough to get older by the day as healthy human beings, we should spend our energy celebrating that, rather than chasing some false notion of perfection.

I know. It's enough to make you weep, isn't it? I mean, I know it's always been done, but because it is SO easy in Photoshop, it's now being done all the time as standard. In this picture, the cover girl has 1: more hair added; 2: all crow's feet, lip lines and other wrinkles removed; 3: moles removed and her earlobes redesigned; 4: weight removed from her back and stomach; and 5: - most creepily of all - her HANDS removed and replace by extra arm length. How weird is this? It's not as if she wasn't beautiful to start with, especially after a professional going-over by professional hairdressers, makeup artists and photographers. It is just setting up a 'normal' standards that are physically impossible as well as undesireable.
