Dressing for grown-ups, part three

Fashion for the over-40s.

Following on from articles one and two, here are five more tips on how to look good at any age.

11 Create a signature look
Once you hit 40 is the time in your life to focus on what you yourself are really interested in when it comes to clothing - not what the designers tell you that you should be interested in. There is no need to change your look from season to season - it is easier and more workable to develop a signature look.

Dressing for grown-ups, part one

A reader asked me the other day for some advice on dressing over 50 if you’re not overweight - because most dress advice seems to assume that you are, she said.

Although I’m still in my 40s, I take her point, and our situations are no different. One of the things that bugs me a bit about dressing ‘advice’ for grown-up women is that it assumes you’ve let yourself go and your main objective should now be to disguise your enormous pot belly and disgusting wobbly thighs.

Bra savvy part three - what to avoid

As you get older you need a good, supportive bra - here’s what to look for

We’re talking here about your everyday bras - the type that hoick up your boobs, stop all jiggle and give you a great silhouette under clothing. This type of firmly structured bra has to be chosen for practicality rather than overall beauty, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t attractive options to choose from. For evening or special occasions, of course, it’s great to wear a lingerie bra - pretty, lace, flimsy in construction - but this kind of design just doesn’t cut the mustard for every day.

Here’s what to avoid.

Bra savvy part two - design basics

As you get older, you need your bra to do more for you - but do you know what to look for? Here we’ll look at bra anatomy

LaRedpolka 1ElomiKristieclose 1Glamorisemagicliftclose 1There are a number of facets to the structure of a good supportive bra that are crucial: seams in the cups, wide straps, a deep back section with multiple hooks, and firm fabrics without a lot of give. Bras of this type, let’s be honest, look better under clothing than they do on the body, but you’ll be glad you made the switch. You need to avoid skimpy materials, skimpy cuts such as plunge and demi-cup, and moulded cups - none of these options offers enough support.

Makeup for the grown-up girl

Lauren Hutton’s range of makeup and skincare products is aimed specifically at older women

A pretty good pin-up herself for the over-50s, Lauren Hutton came up with her own makeup range when she couldn’t find anything suitable once she returned to modelling at the age of 46.

“Most makeup available today is formulated for younger women,” says Hutton. “The textures are heavy, the colors saturated and they’re filled with shiny particles that act like airport runway lights in every line, wrinkle or pore, saying ‘Look over here!’”

As we age, she believers, our faces demand different beauty products and different ways to put them on.

Bra savvy part one

As you get older, you need your bra to work harder, but do you really know what to look for?

Claudette 1cally 7910 1ElomiKristieWhen a woman has small or firm breasts she doesn’t generally give the design of her bra much thought - she simply chooses styles, materials and colours that she enjoys wearing. But when you hit 40 and your breasts begin to lose their firmness, the structure of a bra is what becomes all-important, not the colour or the trim.

All-in-one makeup

My friend Susie put me onto this product the other day.

Go Natural is an all-in-one makeup. Basically it’s a heat-activated bronzer: you just apply it to your face, adding a bit extra where you want more effect, such as lips, eyes and cheeks and voila, claim the manufacturers, you look healthier and fully made up.
